Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy
Symptoms
- Weakness of the voluntary muscles (degree of weakness and the muscles most affected vary greatly according to the type of MMD and the age)
- Heart can develop abnormal rhythms
- Heart muscle can weaken
- Muscles used for breathing can weaken (can cause inadequate breathing, especially during sleeping)
Prognosis
- Varies depending on the symptons of the disease
Treatments
- Aimed at managing symptoms and minimizing disability.
- Multidisciplinary team needed.
- Inability to relax muscles may be treated with a drug such as Mexiletine.
- Provide individualized exercise and stretching programs for the treatment of weakness and contractures.
