Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy

Symptoms

• Weakness of the voluntary muscles (degree of weakness and the muscles most affected vary greatly according to the type of MMD and the age)
• Heart can develop abnormal rhythms
• Heart muscle can weaken
• Muscles used for breathing can weaken (can cause inadequate breathing, especially during sleeping)

Prognosis

• Varies depending on the symptons of the disease

Treatments

• Aimed at managing symptoms and minimizing disability.
• Multidisciplinary team needed.
• Inability to relax muscles may be treated with a drug such as Mexiletine.
• Provide individualized exercise and stretching programs for the treatment of weakness and contractures.
